Dr Judy Crates, Principal Castro School says:

Testimonial :
"Buddies4Math offers Castro at-risk students the opportunity to experience math as a recreational activity, not just a class at school. Dedicated volunteers from local middle and high schools work in small group activities in math concepts and applications with third and fourth graders every Friday afternoon. Our students look forward to the session and it's amazing to see how excited and engaged they are in math. Not only has the program changed student's attitudes and improved their confidence about math, but their math achievement on state tests has also improved. Our Latino students gained 64 points on the API last year, contributing to a 43 point gain for the school."

From the Fourth Grade:

Today we started off with a couple rounds of Multiplication Bingo.  After we had a few winners we moved on to some STAR Test practice worksheets, and once the fourth graders each did two worksheets we moved on to playing multiplication and division games in smaller groups.

From the Second Grade :
Today was our second Friday session with STAR (California Standardized Testing And Reporting) review. The students are starting to understand strategies they should be using on the test, like making sure they know what the question is asking and checking all the answer choices before selecting one. We're hoping this review will magnify the effects of our program on the students' STAR scores.

From the Third Grade:

As usual the 3rd graders began with a group game of multiplication bingo. Then they were broken into groups of three or four and continued their work on the STAR test worksheets. The session ended with some division games within the smaller groups.

We are excited to be awarded a micro grant from Gunn @ Your Service for "turning innovative ideas into extraordinary projects to make our world-nearby and far away-a better place."

Our well deserved grant allows us to buy new games and manipulatives for our buddies at Castro School.

We spent the session reviewing questions that appear in Star Testing. Some sections proved harder than others for both our second and third graders.

An Update from the Second Grade:

The 2nd graders were excited to return to Buddies4Math after a two week break. We started playing fraction, addition, subtraction and money games and the students did very well.

We are still looking for tutors for the thursday sessions. So, if you would like to work with  a fourth grader, join us in Castro School. We started the session on thursday with a division bingo and worked on building multiplication, fraction and division skills with our fourth grade buddies.
