Testimonial :
"Buddies4Math offers Castro at-risk students the opportunity to experience math as a recreational activity, not just a class at school. Dedicated volunteers from local middle and high schools work in small group activities in math concepts and applications with third and fourth graders every Friday afternoon. Our students look forward to the session and it's amazing to see how excited and engaged they are in math. Not only has the program changed student's attitudes and improved their confidence about math, but their math achievement on state tests has also improved. Our Latino students gained 64 points on the API last year, contributing to a 43 point gain for the school."

Feb 8

Friday sessions which are  normally overflowing with tutors, was missing some of our regular tutors. The flu season is taking its toll. We are trying different games to settle the classes in and by popular demand both grades started off with a round of Bingo. After the round of Bingo, students were paired with tutors and worked on individual games. In Second grade, students had a choice to pick addition, subtraction, place value and money games. In Third grade, the focus was to master multiplication facts and begin basic division.

Feb 7: Thursday Session Begins

We started our Thursday session with 9 tutors and 20 Fourth graders.  The whole class played Fraction Bingo and then moved on to games that tested multiplication and division skills. We are excited to be tutoring this class, since we have been tutoring them from 2010. Some of the tutors were reflecting on how this class of students were hesitant and unsure of themselves in math facts when they started with us in 2010. This past thursday, our fourth graders showed confidence, enthusiasm  skill in their math. They were challenging us to give them more difficult problems and showing us how good they were in math facts. 3 years since we started working with them and they have come a long way! To many of us, this is why we come and tutor.

We have a few spots open on Thursdays. If you would like to volunteer, please sign up below.
