Testimonial :
"Buddies4Math offers Castro at-risk students the opportunity to experience math as a recreational activity, not just a class at school. Dedicated volunteers from local middle and high schools work in small group activities in math concepts and applications with third and fourth graders every Friday afternoon. Our students look forward to the session and it's amazing to see how excited and engaged they are in math. Not only has the program changed student's attitudes and improved their confidence about math, but their math achievement on state tests has also improved. Our Latino students gained 64 points on the API last year, contributing to a 43 point gain for the school."

Math tutoring for Second and Third Graders

Our mentoring program works on building relationships with our second and third grade buddies, hence we expect our tutors to tutor through the fall session.   We meet on the following fridays from 4:00-5:00 p.m. in Castro Elementary School, Mountain View.

October 12th, 19th
November 2nd, 9th, 16th, 30th
December 7th, 14th.

Format of typical B4M Session:
  • Second and Third graders are tutored in two different classrooms.
  • As soon as the students arrive, a group game will be played with them outside by our class leads.
  • After the group game, students will go into the classroom and be paired with their tutors.
  • If you are new to B4M, you will be assigned a mentor with whom you will tutor students.
  • Our sessions involve playing games that focus on math facts and fluency.
  • Please get to know your student. Your goal is to make them feel comfortable and confident about Math!
  • As a tutor be enthusiastic and helpful. Practice and patience does wonders to build confidence in math.
  • Please approach your classroom leads, if you have any questions about the games or the format of the session.
  • At the end of the session, leads will hold a  discussion session about tutoring strategies and tips.

We supply all the materials. So, if you are a Middle or High School student who likes math and  working with elementary grade students, sign up to be a volunteer with Buddies4Math by filling out this  volunteer form.  When you fill the online form, you will be contacted by our volunteers.
